I think I’m gonna wait a little bit. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it am I right? I’ll wait until I actually can’t run something I want to run on 7 before upgrading.

10 is meant to be the best of 7 & 8 + win 7 support will eventually end and then you will either be stuck with an OS that is not getting updates or have to buy a license for 10, if your not 100% sure on it right now, get a VM running with the tech preview whilst you still can

But what about 2000, 8.1, 98SE, 3.11, WFW, etc?

2000 was the tits, 98 was shit, 98SE was the tits, 3.11 was far better than 3.1, WFW was even moar better.

Officially, it’s to signal that 10 is a fresh start, and not just a continuation of 7 and 8.

Reportedly, it’s because a lot of software would check to see if someone was running an old version of windows by just seeing if the version started with “9”, so a “windows 9” would trip a lot of “You need a newer OS to run this” messages.

Windows 8 was bad enough to finally push me over to a Mac the last time I bought a computer.

My gf needs a new one soon. Her current computer is running 7 but it’s old and heavy and she wants something lighter. Since she’s going to have to learn a new OS either way with Windows 10 or Mac, really the only thing keeping her leaning towards a Windows machine is price.

I've always found this to be fact. They make all kinds of changes for the bad ones, let everyone complain about the nuances. Then they fix them all for the next OS

I had very specific features I wanted and in my case the only Windows machine with similar specs to my MBPr 13 was $300 more. I didn’t want to spend $300 more for the one with the OS that I hated.

My gf is not as particular about gadgets as I am so she should be fine with a Windows 10 laptop assuming Windows 10 actually doesn’t suck, and we are not a household that’s stuck one one particular company’s products.

Last week I bought her a perfectly decent Acer 8” Android tablet to replace her 2012 Nexus 7 that’s been running like shit ever since the Lollipop update. It was 120 bucks and she’s totally happy with it.

A laptop is a bit outside price range of me just making an impulse buy on one for her. Unless it’s a Chromebook...maybe.

You’re going to miss out. Win10 is leagues ahead of Win7 plus the upgrade doesn’t kill your current 7 license. You can always downrev if you want.

PS: Plenty of people are still using XP because plenty of people are stupid

And if you had Windows NT, you got to skip all the crap that was in 95, 98, and ME before buying 2000...which was just another version of NT with a different name.

Also, the reports of 8 being terrible are greatly exaggerated; it even improves performance. Vista wasn’t even that bad, but Vista did have a performance penalty so I let it stay in the bad category.

Technically, Windows 8 is superior in every way to previous versions.

The user experience suffered a bit, however. But a lot of this was fixed in Windows 8.1, and even more in 8.1u1

I barely noticed the lack of a Start button in Windows 8, and any other UI deficiencies have been forgotten. For both 8 and 8.1, though, the speed and stability of my computer have been better than they ever were with 7. I would get random, infrequent crashes with 7, and I’ve never had that problem with 8/8.1. I’m even hesitant to actually follow through on the upgrade to Windows 10, since it’s that good and because I worry about UI inconsistencies with 10. The direction they are taking the icon aesthetics, especially the charms, bothers me; all thin and Android-looking.

So NT would be... NT 3.1, NT 3.5, NT 3.5.1, NT 4.0, then 2000, XP, XP 64-bit, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10...

Or if you wanted to include server OSes...

The biggest win for me with 8.1 was driver support. So many new network drivers that work out of the box compared to win7. Which is great, because as long as you have network you can get any other drivers you need through Windows Update or OEM websites.
